In case the constant renditions of “Let It Go” didn’t drive you to drink since the release of “Frozen” last November, the latest news out of Disney just might.
A new ride based on the most successful Disney movie ever is coming to Walt Disney World’s Epcot theme park — and displacing Maelstrom, the boat ride through a forest inhabited by trolls and marked by gentle plummets in a Viking-style boat at the Norway pavilion. The attraction sailed its last voyage on Sunday.
But not all things go out of style — and perhaps they’ll make Disney reconsider tearing down the next attraction. Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride closed in the Magic Kingdom in 1997 and was replaced by The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. But as of 2012, Disney was mulling a movie about the eponymous amphibian. And just this year, Disney reopened a redesigned Fantasyland with a heavy focus on Snow White, including the new thrill ride Seven Dwarfs Mine Train.
Whether you agree with the march of progress or will raise a toast to the dearly departed tonight, one Disney fan made a valid point to The Orlando Sentinel:
“I know that change has to happen and that ‘Frozen’ is a very successful franchise, but the World Showcase was made to spotlight cultures from around the world and history and how different people lived.”
Farewell, Maelstrom. You weren’t spectacular, but a boat ride in the dark is great scary fun as a kid and the best spot to make out in the whole park for adults.
