As a 30-year veteran of the fitness world, with over 100 instructional DVDs to her name, Denise Austin has likely seen every fitness trend out there. However, one workout routine that she swears by is one of the simplest forms of movement: walking.
For Austin, however, simple walking is not a complete workout. The fitness expert’s latest DVD, “Fat Burning Walk” is a 30-minute program for home use. While you might not think of walking as a high cardio activity, Austin says you should reconsider.
“I keep the heart rate up for 30 minutes — that’s when the fat starts burning,” she says. “I take you through some intervals that pick up the speed. When you do all the moves, it’s a great combo of muscle conditioning and cardio.”
The DVD begins with a warm-up and ends with a cool down and, in between, there are exercises for arm toning, leg strengthening, butt sculpting and waist-whittling.
Austin says that anyone can do this kind of workout — even those who find exercise difficult. Also, unlike running and extreme interval training, the moves in “Fat Burning Walk” are easier on the joints.
“It’s great for people who travel and want to keep up their exercise regime while they’re away,” Austin says.
“It’s designed to be convenient and stress-free. It’s designed to make you feel self-accomplishment, because it is designed for success. And success makes you feel good about yourself.
The moves
Everyone knows how to walk, but here are some exercises from Austin that amp things up.

“Work your glutes, thighs and upper body with this exercise. Kick your leg up; consider it like a backward leg curl paired with an arm curl to the front to really feel it.”

“Work those arms and your upper body while reaching your steps goal. Really do strong punches while extending your arms.”
